What is Scrum – and How Did it Start?

Scrum is the brainchild of Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka. In 1986, they published a ten-page article in the Harvard Business Review about their revolutionary new approach to project management. In their article, “The New New Product Development Game”, Takeuchi and Nonaka laid out the basics of their new approach using rugby analogies to illustrate their ideas.

The work went largely unnoticed until the early 1990s, when Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber collaborated to compile a wealth of writings, information and best practices on what was dubbed the Scrum framework.
