Not a whole lot has changed in traditional project management over the years. In fact, many companies still operate under the same roles and procedures as they have for decades. Today, however, Scrum is changing all that. The Scrum framework is turning traditional project management on its head – and bringing fantastic progress and success in its wake.
Scrum is the brainchild of Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka. In 1986, they published a ten-page article in the Harvard Business Review about their revolutionary new approach to project management. In their article, “The New New Product Development Game”, Takeuchi and Nonaka laid out the basics of their new approach using rugby analogies to illustrate their ideas.
The work went largely unnoticed until the early 1990s, when Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber collaborated to compile a wealth of writings, information and best practices on what was dubbed the Scrum framework. Thus, the modern Scrum framework – the framework we discuss at our Agile Scrum Master certification classes in Charlotte, North Carolina – came into being.
For a long time, the framework was largely used within the software development and IT world; however, recent years have seen a dramatic rise in Scrum adoption across numerous organizations and industries. Today, companies from every sphere have adopted the Scrum framework, and many are seeing dramatic improvement in productivity, teamwork, and overall success.
